Title:

Novel Use and Treatment of Waste Streams in Mining – Two Case Studies

The speaker will present what can be accomplished by thinking beyond treating waste streams and considering how they might apply the effluent to useful purposes.
  1. Water from a sewage treatment plant is further polished for use as plant water in reprocessing gold tailings. Tertiary water treatment removes suspended solids and organics to maximize carbon performance in the CIL circuit and is substantially less expensive than potable water, used previously.
  2. Regulators and industry cooperate to treat acid mine drainage prior to discharge. The original concept was to use effluent from the treatment flowsheet as process water in a nearby power plant. The needed pipeline was not economically feasible, but the treatment plant did permit the mine to pump levels down and expose a previously inaccessible coal seam, and that coal is used in the same power plant.
